Serious ideation

Serious ideation is searching for "those things that don't fit" in a deliberate way.  It is about surfacing and making sense of the concepts around the product, service or process under innovation.

The key to serious ideation is to arrange these concepts into 3 categories:

Directions
where the innovation is headed
Barriers
what’s preventing movement
Breakthroughs
the creative way of removing the barrier
  • opportunities
  • potential
  • goals
  • outcomes
  • issues
  • problems
  • weaknesses
  • dilemmas
  • solutions
  • possibilities
  • ideas
  • brainwaves

A concept is only truly innovative if the content in two or more of the above categories is significantly different from the status quo.
